Do you speak any foreign languages? If so which ones? Some French, less Italian, some German. I am very out of practice on all of them. I could get the French back quickly, Italian would take more time, and German more time, still. And I very much want to learn Spanish.
Are there any community, charity, or civic organizations you are passionate about? If so, tell us all about it! I was a big brother in the Big Brother Association of Greater Boston for 10 years. Are there any community, charity, or civic organizations you are passionate about? If so, tell us all about it! I was a big brother in the Big Brother Association of Greater Boston for 10 years. My little brother was the best man at my wedding. I served on the board, chairing many committees, and became executive VP. I swam for the south Boston boys club when I was a kid and served on the board of the Middlesex County boys and girls club, as well as the boys and girls club of Salem NH.
I had my last drink of alcohol on June 6, 1983, and I am a passionate supporter of alcoholics anonymous. I'm a member of the Greater Salem Chamber of Commerce, when I owned a marketing and advertising agency, I donated a fully integrated website and social media designs to ironstone farm and challenge unlimited of Andover, ma, an organization that uses horses to provide therapeutic development for children with special needs such as autism. I also donated a fully integrated website to scan (stop child abuse now) in northern Virginia.
Do you have any realtor designations? Military on the move, a program that now includes first responders.
Who inspires you and why? There are four people who inspire me, all of whom are genetically connected, the apple not falling far from the tree, as it were. My mother-in-law, Fran Vaccaro, is the single most amazing person I have ever known. The way she thought and expressed those thoughts, displayed amazing intelligence and insight, gentleness and strength, passion and compassion, understanding and love, while at the same time being hysterically funny. She was a gifted artist, her favorite medium being the most intricate and detailed pencil sketches imaginable. My wife, Elaine Wallace, is so similar that I very often see her mother in some of her expressions and gestures. Elaine is also a gifted artist, and her medium is photography. She is self-taught and is the most talented photoshop artist I have ever met or heard about. The other two are my identical twin daughters, Sabrina and Rebecca. Each of them could be the person I am talking about in every aspect of the above descriptions. Also, I have seen both of them, on different occasions and under entirely different circumstances, at different ages (one was at the age of 4 and the other was when she was an eighth-grader), actively demonstrate (without knowing that's what they were doing, which makes it even more impressive) a depth of unwavering and deep-seated courage, that I haven't witnessed in any adult I have ever known. I have often said that when the four of them are together it is the most amazing degree of pure entertainment a person could imagine. I believe I am the most fortunate man on the planet. One final note - my mother-in-law became a yoga instructor when she was in her mid-sixties. She and my wife looked more like sisters than mother and daughter. The five of us were out to lunch one day and, from the time we sat down until the time we walked out the door, it was a tsunami of non-stop talking and laughter. At one point I looked around the crowded restaurant and approximately 90% of the other diners mostly just sat there and looked at the table - very rarely even engaging in the most mundane dialog with each other.
What's your favorite quote? There are too many. But, in that you are going to use them to paint some kind of picture about me, I reserve the right to give you three. If you must use just one, I would select the Emerson quote. They are, and not in order of importance:
"seek not to change the world, seek but to change your mind about the world." - a course in miracles
"it is one of the beautiful compensations of this life that no one can sincerely try to help another without helping himself." - Ralph Waldo Emerson
"one man can make a difference, and every man should try." - John F. Kennedy
What's your favorite book and why? "the stand" by Stephen King. This is the only book I read 3 times, first in hardcover, next as an audiobook, and I also read the updated and edited version, where king put back about 400 pages that he had originally taken out because the publisher could not print a book of that size and keep it holding together.
King created a masterful blend of imagination and reality, in a (now prescient) post-apocalyptic novel about a virus, the superflu called Captain Tripps (covid?) That began at a military testing installation and his framing of the spread and the way it marginalized the survivors into two distinct camps is amazing.
Stephen king's imagination was on full throttle with his character development, unmatched storytelling ability, his talent for relationship building and destroying, and an underlying current of a struggle between the forces of darkness and light. In what ultimately became a deeply spiritual fight between good and evil.
And to think that he wrote that book at a time in his life when he was a full-blown alcoholic and typed it on an IBM typewriter!
